Senegal and Congo Battle to 1-1 Draw in Thrilling CHAN Showdown

The highly anticipated clash between Senegal and Congo ended in a hard-fought draw, with both teams earning a point after a thrilling TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) encounter at the Amaan (Amani) Stadium in Zanzibar, Tanzania.

The match was well contested, with Senegal dominating possession for large stretches but struggling to convert their chances. Congo broke the deadlock in the 19th minute when Dechan Moussavou scored with a right-footed shot from the centre of the box, finding the high centre of the goal. The goal was assisted by Charles Atipo’s cross.

Senegal had a couple of near misses, including a close attempt in the 30th minute when Moctar Koïté’s shot from outside the box was blocked after receiving a pass from Christian Gomis. Another opportunity came in the 33rd minute when Christian Gomis’s attempt from the centre of the box was also blocked by the determined Congo defence.

With Congo holding an early goal advantage, both sides continued to press for more goals, making for an exciting first half that ended with Congo leading 1-0. In the second half, Senegal ramped up their efforts to find an equaliser, launching several attempts that were well-resisted by the resilient Congo side.

Despite their pressure in the closing stages, the Congo defence, inspired by their goalkeeper Samba, held firm, making several crucial interceptions and blocks to frustrate Senegal’s attackers.

The critical moment came in the 82nd minute when Joseph Layousse equalised for Senegal. He found the back of the net with a well-placed shot from the centre of the box after a corner kick, igniting the Senegalese players as they pushed hard for a late winner.
